From Real Construction Sites to Digital Innovations: An Inspiring Lecture by Vadym Parnytskyi

On April 25, students and faculty of the Department of Structural Mechanics had a unique opportunity to dive into the world of modern construction technologies during a guest lecture titled “Experience in Applying BIM Technologies in Construction.” The invited speaker was Vadym Parnitskyi, one of the founders of BIM HELP, head of the BIM department at the development company UDP, a construction engineer, designer, BIM manager, and participant in landmark projects with over 15 years of experience.

The lecture was organized for master’s students of the “Construction and Civil Engineering” program as part of the course “Modern Computer Technologies in Construction,” but it also attracted significant interest from other students and faculty who joined the event.

The lecture was highly engaging and practical, with Vadym sharing his real-world experience working on notable Ukrainian projects.

Career Path: From Construction Site to BIM

Vadym’s story began with the early stages of his career: as a student, he gained experience on real construction sites, progressing from concrete work to site foreman and chief engineer on major Kyiv projects such as Ocean Plaza Mall and IQ Business Center. This fast-paced work environment and the need to make decisions on the fly laid a strong foundation for his further development.

Vadym specifically highlighted his experience in bridge reconstruction. He described working on 50- to 60-year-old structures in critical condition, often developing design solutions directly on the construction site. It was during this time that the need arose to move beyond 2D plans and create real 3D models, marking the beginning of his deep engagement with BIM technologies.

Innovative Projects and BIM

A significant milestone in his career was joining the innovative UNIT.City project—a true “city within a city” combining education, innovation, offices, and housing. Vadym shared how implementing BIM in this large-scale development project helped coordinate the work of dozens of teams, minimize errors, streamline data transfer, and ensure transparent and manageable construction processes, even under the challenging conditions of wartime.

Another challenge was working on wind power plant projects. Vadym explained how digital modeling enabled the calculation of complex reinforcement for the foundations of giant wind turbines, each requiring about 100 tons of rebar. Without precise models and foresight of all details, constructing such structures would have been nearly impossible.

Infrastructure Restoration

Special attention was given to the topic of infrastructure restoration following combat operations. One example was a bridge reconstruction project in the Kyiv region damaged during hostilities. Vadym described how BIM enabled the design of complex operations, such as lifting a 200-ton span and creating temporary supports, which were critical for restoring transportation links.

During the lecture, students saw not only examples of completed models but also real stories—how technologies are applied in practice, which solutions help avoid costly mistakes, and how important it is to be flexible and creative in the construction profession today.

Automation by BIM HELP

Vadym also shared his company BIM HELP’s developments in automating construction processes: software solutions for quickly calculating volumes and costs from BIM models, systems for translating documentation, and testing online platforms for collaborative work.

Discussion and Message to Students

Following the main presentation, a lively discussion took place. Students asked questions about technical aspects, the realities of working in Ukraine, requirements for young professionals, the importance of mastering modern tools, and the ability to quickly adapt to changes. Vadym Parnitskyi’s main message was that the construction industry is undergoing a digital revolution, and today’s students have the chance to be part of these major transformations.
